MORE THAN A CARVING CHAPTER 20

MORE THAN A CARVING
CHAPTER 20
The shocking death of Kayode really affected Iwalade; she broke down and was sick for weeks. Mrs Badmus had to come over to her daughter’s house to nurse her and the woman got to meet Imisi who stood by Iwalade’s side all through. The two get along quite well, trying all their possible best to ensure that Iwalade gets better. Mrs. Williams, Imisi’s mother was already in town, Imisi had explained to her all that happened while she was away and he also told her the present state of Iwalade who could hardly talk. She was just in her shell ever since she returned from the burial. It was bad that the doctor had to place her on anti-depressant drugs and they all believed that she will get over the shock. Imisoluwa doesn’t stay at home during weekends; he only went home to sleep at late night. He has really been helpful and Mrs. Badmus appreciated his care for her daughter even though she knew nothing about their relationship. Although at some point, she became suspicious with the way Imisioluwa was acting around Iwalade. Imisioluwa got back home on Saturday evening and to his surprise his mum was still awake by 11pm, he greeted her and walked past her to climb the stairs but she called her son back. “Where are you coming from?” Mrs. Williams asked. “Mum, what kind of question is that, you know where I’m coming from.” “And you think you will not break down yourself!” “I’m fine mum.” “You worked all through the week and still come back home to attend to her, now the weekend that you are supposed to use to rest; you still spend it over there.” “Mum, she would have done the same for me.” “I’m not against you helping but Iwalade’s mum is there. You left this house before eight in the morning and look at the time.” Mrs. Williams said pointing to the big wall clock hung on the wall. “Mum, just say it plainly that you are jealous.” “If that’s what you’ll call it, fine. You hardly have my time in this house.” “Mum, get use to it; I’m planning to get married anytime soon.” “Imisi, you are planning to get married at what age. Do you even hear yourself?” “Mum, I’m tired; we’ll talk about this some other time.” He wanted to leave but she stopped him. “We are talking about it now. Are you dating someone without my knowledge?” “Yes.” “I hope you guys are not having sex.” “Mum!”
“Okay, fine. I want to meet her.” “Great, you’ll meet her soon. Can I go sleep now?” “Goodnight.” She said and he replied and climbed up the stairs. Fullhouse had been trying Iwalade’s phone lines but none was going through, he actually found out about Kayode’s death online and he was trying to get across to Iwalade just to greet her, he knew most of their history and understood it’s going to be a tough one on Iwalade. It was Mrs. Badmus who told Imisi to switch off Iwalade’s phones, since she refused to pick her calls, reason why her lines were not available. She wasn’t even talking to the people she can see not to talk of those who she can’t even see. Iwalade barely talk to her Mum and Imisi, she was just in her shell all quiet, her mum had done everything to make her talk but she will only nod or shake her head when they ask her questions. ****** Ireoluwa was doing well with her pregnancy and Fullhouse was at ease, she wasn’t showing yet but there were obvious changes in her body. Few people in school already knew she was pregnant, even her coursemate, Seth had noticed the changes in her. Ireoluwa was shocked the day Seth whispered congratulations to her ears. “You are a wizard. How did you know?” “Your body has changed and you can’t expect me not to notice. I’m your close buddy remember.” “Hmm…you have a point though.” “You can say that again. I’m going to be a god father very soon.” Seth bragged. “God father ko, god father ni.” She hissed at him playfully. “Don’t worry; I’ll talk to your husband because I deserve it.” ‘Don’t bother yourself; you’ve forgotten my husband’s friend and twin abi, Uncle Gbotemi.” Ireoluwa tried to joggle his brain, and then he remembered that they met at Ireoluwa’s wedding. “Aww….that’s right, I think I’m out.” Seth admitted. “You see…..Anyway, don’t worry, I’ll let the baby know that you are a very special person.” “Really! So, how special am I?” “A distinguished wealthy son of a senator, humble, down to earth and a man with a kind heart who went as far as helping me get revenge on the baby’s daddy when he messed up.” She said and Seth burst into laughter. Ireoluwa was actually referring to what transpired between the three of them before she got married to Fullhouse and she can’t just help but laugh whenever she remember the incident.“Now, you’ve spoiled everything must you tell the baby that part.” He said. “Why not.” Ireoluwa said and they both laughed all over again. “Anyway, skip that revenge part, the other things I said about you are true, you are truly a nice person and you always respect my decisions.” She confessed. “Truly, I’m flattered.” “I’m not flattering you Seth. You know sometimes, I do ask myself that if I’m from a wealthy family like yours, will I be this humble.” “Sure you will, shebi it’s you, Ireoluwa. In fact, you will be better than me. You know I actually learnt the act of giving through you. I know I never told you before, but I’m moved whenever I see you helped people and so I started giving too.” “Wow! Really.” “Not just that, I thought you will change after you got married but you are still the same, not forming married woman like some people we know on campus do but here you are. Even academically, you are still doing great.” “Aww….now you are gonna make me cry….” She said blinking her eyes repeatedly. “Aww….please, don’t cry.” Seth mimicked her and they both laughed it off. Then her phone rang, it was her husband. He didn’t go to work that day, so he was the one who brought her to class in the morning and he was back to take her home. “It’s my husband, see you in class tomorrow.” Ireoluwa waved at Seth and stood up to leave, he replied her goodbye and then she picked the call. The two got home, and Ireoluwa went straight to the kitchen, she knew Fullhouse would have cooked before coming to pick her up. Ever since she got pregnant, Fullhouse did most of the chores; he told Ireoluwa to just concentrate on her studies and her health which was paramount to him. Ireoluwa opened the pot but met white rice and she screamed her husband’s name. “Fullhouse!” “What?” He showed up in the kitchen. “I said I want concortion rice….” She stamped her feet on the floor like a child. “Oooo…….I thought you said white rice nau.” Fullhouse said. “No jo……I said concortion rice.” “Manage the white rice, the soup is sweet o. You try it.” He said but she shook her head sideways. “The food won’t go jo.” “Okay, go to the sitting room, I’ll fix the concortion rice.” He sighed and she felt bad. “I’m stressing you abi. I’m sorry.”
“No problem.” “I’ll keep your company, I would have cooked it but you know I won’t eat it if I cook it myself.” Ireoluwa explained. “I understand. If you want to keep my company, then find yourself a seat.” “Okay.” She said and sat on a stool. Then Fullhouse get to work and the two got talking. “I called Iwalade’s mum.” He said to his wife. “Really, how far with Aunty Iwalade?” “She is not doing well; in fact, she shut everyone out including her mum.” “That her friend’s death really affected her o.” “Yes, they are childhood friends, so it’s understandable. I believe she will come around.” “Hope she’s seeing a doctor.” “Yes, and I was told she was placed on anti depressant.” “My God, I really feel for her. Let’s go visit her one of these weekends.” “I was thinking in that direction too but with your condition and all these Covid 19 thing, I don’t think that is a good idea.” He explained and she puffed up. “I know you won’t allow somebody to go.” “Is that why you want to burst?” He joked and she laughed. Then she acted normal again. “You can go alone then, if you don’t want me to travel.” “I don’t want to leave you here alone either.” “I will be….” “Fine…. I know that.” He took the word from her mouth. “But no, thanks.” “I know this is the exact reply I will get.” I’ll just continue to call her mum to monitor her improvement.” “Okay…..may God grant her quick recovery in Jesus name.” “Amen.” He replied and announced that her food was ready. He opened the pot and stirred. “Hmmmm……..my concoction rice is ready.” She said as she perceived the aroma of the food. She stood up and passed him a plate and he dished the food. She carried her food, smiling at the food and they both left the kitchen Fullhouse picked his laptop, he had a zoom meeting, he settled down on the couch as he connected with the Lagos office.
At night, after having dinner of plantain and egg, the couple bathed together and went to bed to sleep, they had a very short sex time while Fullhouse ensured he was gentle with her using the most comfortable position, after this the two drifted to sleep. Four weeks after Kayode’s death, Iwalade was back to her normal self, on the last day of her episode, she cried and cried all through that day and by the next day to the amusement of her mum and Imisi, she regains full control of herself. Days later, her mum returned to her own house, Iwalade was grateful to her mum for nursing her back to health, so she packed a lot of things for her when she was leaving and the woman was happy to see her back to her normal self again. Iwalade also showed her appreciation to the love of her life, Imisioluwa, who stood by her all through, she was grateful that he understood the kind of relationship she shared with her late friend and didn’t judge her. A week later, she had opened her laptop and resumed work fully, and luckily for her, time was still on her side for the submission of the work at hand, she is the very meticulous type when it comes to her work, so in a week she rounded up all that is needed to be done. Imisioluwa was happy to see her lively again; he had missed her so much that he always stops at her place whenever he’s returning from work. He stopped again as usual and this time, Iwalade pour out her mind. “Imisi, you need to rest too, I’m fine now, and you don’t need to stop over at my place every day. We can just talk on phone.” Iwalade said to him as he settled down beside her. “Really, says the girl who shut everyone out for good four weeks.” He teased. “That was then, as you can see, I don’t really need you again.” She said holding his face in her hand and he kissed her on the lips. “I know how close the two of you are. I know you have history with him. Even I that just met him once was also shock at the news of his death. Imagine, a strong, fine looking man like that just died. I mean he looks so healthy.” “Yes, he takes good care of himself; I just don’t know why he threw all caution to the wind when it comes to Covid 19.” “You know I was like that before too, you made me wear nose mask by fire by force and all the washing of hands was because I know you won’t let me into your house if I don’t and before I knew it, I got use to it, even at work , I’m all masked up except I’m alone.” He explained. “I tell people that Covid is real and not a scam.” “It’s actually real but I just pray the thing go away, it could be tiring at times.” “True, we should even be grateful to God, it is worst in other countries.” Iwalade pointed out. “We thank God for that and I pray the Lord will protect the rest of us from the deadly virus.” “Amen o….in Jesus name.” She said and Imisioluwa took her hands.
“Iwalade, please don’t do that again and I mean it.” “Sincerely, it wasn’t intentional; I don’t even know what went wrong with me as well. It seems like the whole world paused when Kayode….” “It’s alright.” Imisi quickly changed the subject. “You are fine now and that is all that matters to me.” “Yeah, that reminds me, I called everyone you asked me to call back including Fullhouse, and I spoke to his wife and guess what?” “Let me guess….” He said thinking. “She is pregnant.” “Wow! You are so right and I’m so happy for them.” Iwalade said joyfully. “I’m glad you made those calls, so they won’t think you ignored your calls on purpose. You need to see the numerous phone calls your mum received from your family members and friends, reason why she told me to switch off your phone. If not that the doctor warns that we give you space, this place would have been flooded with people. Even that your friend, Lara’s sister……” He was trying to remember. “Temidun.” She helped him out. “Yes, she insisted on coming but your mum told her the doctor advised that you should be left alone.” He explained. “Speaking about Lara….” “Iwa, please, I’m sorry her name even came up.” “What, there’s nothing wrong in talking about her.” “Sincerely, I don’t want to.” “Okay then.” She said. “That reminds me, I bought something for you, and it’s still in the guest room where I kept it.” Imisioluwa informed. “You don’t mean it, when?” “I bought it during the time I spent a week at your place.” “Oh!” She exclaimed and he went to the guest room and brought out a wrapped gift and gave it to her. Iwalade unwrap the gift. “You got me lingerie!” “I can’t wait to see you in them.” He said looking into her eyes. “Imisi!” “I’m willing to wait.” He said and they dropped the issue. The two continued with their gist until Iwalade stopped them. “You need to go home now, it’s getting late.” She said and he agreed to leave. They said their goodnights and shared a brief kiss and he left.
