EPISODE 20 (Not edited)
Fehintola went back to the cyclist.
“I’m through, let's go”
“How did it go?” The cyclist asked
“Fine,” She answered.
“Why did you even come, I thought we were going to rescue the girl.” The cyclist asked.
Fehintola was surprised at the way he suddenly switched from pidgin to English language.
“No, I just came to know the house” She didn’t want to give the cyclist the full details, no one can be trusted, especially strangers, he might even be a close relative of Ryan, you never can tell, Fehintola thought.
“I remembered when my sister was almost raped to death a few years back, if not for God’s intervention,” he said.
“Oh, I’m sorry about that” Tola felt for the lady.
“No. it’s been a long time” he smiled.
“I hope the rapist is still in prison?” Tola asked.
“Prison keh, it’s not everyone that has money for a case, we spent the little we have on us on hospital bills and food”
“I hope she’s fine now?”
“Yes, very fine, she’s married now with two kids”
“If you had arrested the guy, maybe the police would have at least forced him to pay the hospital bills”
“Hun! In a situation where I don’t have money to give to the police, the guy will just bribe them and they will release him on bail, It won’t even get to court”
“You are right” Fehintola supported
“Even if you get to court, you might not win the case because he’s from a rich home, while we only struggle to eat out of the three square meal then”
“Hmmm,” Tola sighed.
“This country ehn, the judge might even tell us to compensate him for spoiling his name”
“True though”
“This country where wickedness is being justified, and the few righteous ones are left to suffer”
“May God help us”
“Amen”
“I didn’t know you can speak English,” Tola said
“Oh, I go school small, na condition make crayfish bend” he laughed.
“Really?” Tola asked surprised.
“Yeah, I studied Mechanical engineering at UNN and I finished with a first-class”
“Wow! The prestigious UNN”
“Yeah, the prestigious UNN” he laughed again.
“But Mechanical engineering is a nice course, very lucrative”
“Na Naija we dey oo”
“When there’s no job, at least man go chop,” He said. Tola felt for him.
“I graduated from university ten years ago, I started working as a secondary school teacher when the pay wasn’t okay for me, I resigned and started working as a roadside mechanic during the day and do my bike business at night”
“That’s the problem we have in this country, thousands of students graduate every year but no job” Tola lamented.
“At least I’ve been feeding myself, my wife and my son, and I’m able to pay his school fees,” The cyclist said
“Oh, you are married?” Tola asked surprised.
“Yeah, I got married two years ago, thank God I married an understanding woman, I could have died of frustration.”
“Awnnn.. thank God for you” They arrived at the corper’s lodge.
“Thank you for the ride, so how much is the money?”
“Don’t worry, just be good” He said
“What? No way, not even after everything, you just said” Tola answered.
“So you want to pay me out of pity, not because of the service I rendered,” He asked.
“No, that’s not it, I’m sorry if that’s how you feel,” Fehintola said feeling sad.
The cyclist noticed it changed her mood
“It’s nothing, I’m just joking,” he said trying to make her feel better and she nodded.
“I decided not to collect the money from you, because I noticed you have a good heart, if we have more people like you in this country, this country will be the best place to be, I saw you recording the guy’s voice”
“Oh! Thank you” She paused and then continued “But if you carry people with good heart every day, that means you won’t be taking any money home” Tola asked while the cyclist laughed.
“Ok, I’m not paying for the service you rendered, help me give it to your son.” She said stretching out five thousand naira to him.
“No, thank you.” The
“Please, I insist”
“Ok, thanks for the gift” the cyclist collected the money.
“I’m Israel, may I know your name?”
“I’m Fehintola”
“Wow! Nice name, never heard it before”
“You have never heard that name before? You can just call me Tola”
“I think that’s better” he smiled “Let me give you my number, in case you need a witness in court” He smiled.
“Really!” Fehintola almost screamed.
“Yeah” Israel smiled “Nice meeting you Tola”
“It’s my pleasure Mr. Israel” Tola smiled.
