Be Encouraged

My wife and I entered the market to buy foodstuff some years ago. I shared the items and also the money. She was good at buying meat, pepper, onions, and any item that could be priced because she could negotiate better.

I decided to buy the items that had a fixed price so we could finish quickly from the market and head back home.

While buying oil, I noticed my wife stood at the back of the woman standing in front of the meat seller. She wasn't acting like one who was in a hurry. She just stood there waiting patiently. She wasn't competing to buy.

I moved to buy Maggi cubes and she was still there.

At her spot.

When I had bought every other item, I went over to join her.

Then I understood why she could not say a word.

Every woman who stood there came to buy a kilo of meat. Some bought three kilos or more.

My wife had written 150 naira meat on the list so the money could go round. And when she saw I had finished and was now waiting for her, she quickly asked the mallam to cut 150naira meat for her.

The busy mallam looked at my wife. He collected the money and when he saw it was 150naira, he threw back the money at her.

"Madam no meat for this your money. 200 is the last."

I felt bad. My wife picked the money and even though I opted to add the remaining 50naira on me, she drew my hands and we left the market. That day she bought eggs. It was 30naira as at then. We bought six of them.

She cooked the soup, boiled the eggs, and we all ate happily and slept that night.

Why did I share this experience?

Today while writing the list for the soup we planned to cook, my wife told me that the price of meat had become very expensive now and she was going to buy goat meat for 6k for the two soups. That is 3k each.

I added 2k to the money.

"Buy 4k for each."

And just as I was about to leave, I remembered how we once bought 100naira meat to cook soup. I came back and added 2k to the 8k she was holding for meat.

"Tell the mallam to give you 5000 naira meat for each soup. That is 10k"

My wife laughed and hailed me.

"My husband of the world."

One thing I have come to realize is that no condition in life is permanent. Today you may be eating bones in silence. Leaking soup without meat. But tomorrow, you shall eat like a king. And will be the one to reduce the meat from the plate of soup because you need space to find the soup.

Keep the faith. Your time will come.

Your life will change.

And you will testify.

My name is Praises Chidera Obiora and I am the best at what I do.
