MY SECRET 2 (SHORT STORY)
MY SECRET 2 (SHORT STORY)
I woke up and this time, my husband was seated in an empty chair beside my hospital bed. I couldn't tell what expression was on his face. If he was sad or happy or angry I couldn't tell because he wore a blank expression on his face. Our eyes met and we stared at each other for a long minute. When I wanted to tell him that I was sorry, the doctor walked in and told him that I was ready to go home because I was stronger now and my organs were working well.
I began to cry. Hot tears started streaming down my face. I didn't want to go home because I wasn't ready for the next thing that would happen when we get home.
"Darling, why are you crying?" My husband asked.
It was my turn to be shocked. Why was he acting all innocent? As though he wasn't aware of what had just happened.
He walked towards me and hugged me. He kept patting me on the back that I should stop crying because I might just land myself in the hospital again. I left his embrace and looked into his eyes again.
"Am I dreaming?" I asked myself.
"You are not dreaming darling let's go home the kids are waiting." He helped me wear my clothes and held my hand as we walked out of the hospital and towards the parking lot. He even opened the car door for me before going over to the other side.
So many thoughts flowed through my mind and I began to think if my husband knows about the whole drama. So I asked him.
"I heard you went to the hospital with the kids today?" I saw him pause briefly then he continued.
"Yes." He cleared his throat and I began to panic about what would happen when he gets to know that they were not his kids. "I was so stupid to believe the story I heard from a lady that our kids were not mine. So I did a DNA test and found out that,"
His phone interrupted. It was a random caller.
"Hey, how are you doing? Yes, my wife is fine. But I need you to stop by with the kids tomorrow if you don't mind. Please come with mama since she is with you." He ended the call.
"Who was that?"
"Your sister darling. I need us to have a meeting tomorrow before we all leave."
I was confused. What kind of meeting? And where were we leaving to? "I don't understand, where...?"
"Darling, you ask too many questions. Just relax. I just want you to know that I love and treasure you okay?"
My throat ran dry. His last statement was the exact words a hired assassin said to his victim in an American film I watched recently. I quickly brought out my phone to message my brother-in-law the father of my kids. I change my mind and rang his phone instead but I noticed that a phone began to ring in the backseat.
I glanced at my husband, with my heart in my mouth. What exactly was happening.
"What is your brother's phone doing here?" I asked.
"Oh, he forgot it when he stopped by at the house this morning." He smiled.
I wanted to tell him that his brother, the father of my kids was in Kano for the weekend and not in Abuja but my words failed me because I became scared...
