MORE THAN A CARVING
chapter 1 (contd)
“Open this gate first nau….” “The only reason why I will open is because of this environment.” “Thank God you know that.” “Yes, I know, I will open before you embarrass yourself.” She sneered. “Just open the gate; I will still give you your reply.” Kayode said. Iwalade puffed up and eyed him and let him in. “There is a tap over there and sanitizer, so go wash and sanitize your hands.” “You believe this bullshit too! Covid 19 is a scam……” “As enlightened as you are, I can’t believe this is coming from you. By the way, where is your nose mask?” She questioned. “I don’t have one, I don’t wear it.” He replied. “Seriously, so you walk freely on the street of a state that has the highest record of Covid 19 without a nose mask!” “Show me one person you know that has Covid or have died of Covid.” “You better protect yourself, its better to be safe than sorry.” Iwalade advised. “Yimu, sha let me go and wash my hands because I know you will not allow me in if I refuse.” “Thank God you know.” She said and followed him. She watched him as he washed his hands and sanitized them. Kayode entered the house and was stunned at the sight that beholds him. “This is beautiful.” He said as he turned slowly in 360 degree. “Are you stalking me?” Iwalade asked. “What, you can’t even reply my compliment!” “Leave compliment, how did you get to know this place?” Iwalade questioned. “The most important thing is that I’m here. How, is none of your business……” He said trying to tease Iwalade but this didn’t sit well with her because the last person she wants to see at that moment wasn’t Kayode. “Stalker Oshi.” She hissed and left him in the sitting room. Kayode smiled sheepily, sat down and made himself comfortable despite the fact that he knew he wasn’t welcome. Iwalade joined him and her phone started ringing but she was still pissed at the sight of Kayode who was sitting comfortably before her. “You better pick up your phone.” He said and took the phone from the center table and handed it to her. “Pick it nau, it’s Fullhouse, your cousin o.” She eyed him and took the phone from him and accepted the call. Fullhouse already knew about her new house, he got to know through his mum. Her aunt had called to congratulate her, her cousins also chatted her up online to congratulate her and that includes Fullhouse. Fullhouse’s real name is Adekunle but everyone calls him Fullhouse which is the English version of his Yoruba name. He is the only son of the Adeyinkas, Mummy Adeyinka is Iwalade’s aunt, Fullhouse also have a younger sister who schooled abroad, Oreoluwa. Fullhouse is happily married and resides with his wife in Ile-Ife, Osun state. His boss actually did him a favour by transferring him from Lagos office to Ife so he could be with his new bride who is a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). Fullhouse is the one managing the company in Ife and by God’s grace everything has been going on well for him ever since he got married to his young bride, Ireoluwa who just turned 19years. (PS: You can read ‘Underrated’ to know about the love story of Fullhouse and Ireoluwa; how they met and fall in love and how she ended up getting married at that young age.) “Hello Iwalade.” Fullhouse said when the line connected. Iwalade is few years older than Fullhouse but they call each other by their first names but regardless, Fullhouse still treat her like a big sister. “Fullhouse bawo ni? (How are you?)” Iwalade said immediately she picked the call. “I’m good and you.” “I’m fine jare.” “I doubt that. What’s going on with you?” “Nothing I can’t handle. How’s our wife doing?” She asked. “She’s good.” Fullhouse said proudly. “Hmm….Happy to hear that.” “How’s Ife today?” “Ife is cool.” “Lagos is cool too anyway. This one that you are calling me this morning, I hope all is well?” She said that because they hardly talk on phone, they only chat online. “Yea, I come in peace plus I’m here to talk business.” “Business! Fullhouse, you know I don’t do business.” “I know, writing is business too nau, anyway one of our clients needs a writer to help him with a big project he’s working on which will attract international audience and he is ready to pay big.” Fullhouse informed..
“Wow!!!” “I’ve given him your contact. So, he’ll call you later in the day, so you guys can negotiate.” “You are the best cousin in the world, thanks so much.” Iwalade said, elated. “By the way, his name is Mr. Godwin.” “Mr. Godwin. Okay, noted.” “Iwalade, the man is loaded o, don’t dull yourself with the negotiation and I tell you he’s going to be making millions of naira from the project, shey you get?” “I perfectly understand you, thanks so much.” “Anything for you dear cousin, you are really making us proud in the family, so this is the least I can do to promote your craft.” He said. “Thanks, I really appreciate. I’ll feed you back once will strike a deal.” “Alright, take care and have a good day.” “You too, regards to Ireoluwa.” She said referring to his wife. “I will. Bye.” Fullhouse said and ended the call. Iwalade smiled at Kayode who was starring at her. “You see, I brought good luck.” He said with a smile. “My friend, keep quiet.” Iwalade eyed her unwanted visitor and went back into her room and locked it from behind. She continued with the treatment sheet she was writing, an hour later she was done and went back to the sitting room and he saw Kayode who had made himself so comfortable. He had put on the TV and he was busy watching an action film on the cable and a pack of juice and glass was on the stool before him. “Kayode what’s going on here, did I invite you? Why are you……” She was still saying when Kayode jumped on his feet and ran to the kitchen. “What! Kayode have entered my kitchen!” She said and quickly ran after him, then he saw him checking out what he was cooking and then she peeped in. “Kayode! You are boiling rice in my house! Are you nut or something? Did I even invite you here?” “I’m your one and only childhood friend, your childhood crush for that matter.” “So….” “So…..I don’t need an invite.” He pointed out. “Egbami….”(help me) Iwalade said and clapped her hands slowly like a typical Yoruba girl that she is. Kayode opened the deep freezer and brought out a bowl of soup. He opened it, it was vegetable soup.
“I took vegetable last night, so I don’t need this.” He said and closed the container and put it back in the freezer, searching for another container. Then he picked another, opened it and he smiled, the container contains fried stew (Ewa agonyi stew) with assorted meats, the stew Iwalade just made the previous night and haven’t eaten out of it. She had plan on using it to eat ewa agonyi (beans) with yam. She’s very good in preparing the ewa agonyi, she actually learnt it from her mum. “I took vegetable last night.” Iwalade mimicked Kayode. “You have gut o, in my house! Imagine.” She hissed. “Call it whatever you like Iwalade. Just allow me enjoy my food peacefully.” He said and continued with what he was doing, after taking some portion of the fried stew he returned the container back to the freezer. Kayode dished the food, he went straight to the dining where he settled down to eat the food as he savoured the meal, Iwalade just sat afar off watching the handsome, unavoidable devil in her house. Indeed, Kayode was Iwalade’s childhood crush and vice-versa but the truth is that Iwalade had gone past that stage. As for Kayode he is still crushing over her till date. So his own crush had grown from childhood crush to teenage crush and then to adulthood crush because how can we explain how a full grown man and a successful one at that, refused to get married based on the condition that if Iwalade did not marry him then he’s ready to be single for the rest of his life.
