MORE THAN A CARVING CHAPTER 22

MORE THAN A CARVING
CHAPTER 22
A month later, things were still the same, Imisi is still in the hospital struggling to live, he was connected to a life supporting machine and his mum and Iwalade were still in the hospital with him. Iwalade started feeling sick and she went to see a doctor in that same hospital. She was tested, she got the result but decided to put her own issue aside and just concentrate on Imisi. Iwalade started vomiting, she tried to hide it from Mrs. Williams but because they were always together in Imisi’s hospital room, she got to know. “Are you sick?” Mrs. Williams asked tenderly. “I’ll be fine ma.” She replied subtly. “I think its stress, you hardly sleep at night, I suggest you go see a doctor, get treated and then go home to rest.” “Don’t worry ma, I am fine ma.” “I know you already see Imisi as your brother and you don’t want to leave his side but you have to get well first.” “I’ll be fine ma, don’t worry about me.” “Okay, if you don’t want to go home, let’s go see a doctor who will attend to you.” Mrs. Williams offered. “Don’t worry ma, I’ll do that.” Iwalade who knew she needed no further diagnosis said. “You know the doctors here are at my beck and call, I’ll call one of them, and they will come and attend to you here.” Mrs. Williams said and brought out her phone. “I am pregnant ma.” Iwalade spilled. “You are what!” Mrs. Williams couldn’t believe her ears. Iwalade had run a test a week ago and discovered she was pregnant, she only kept it to herself, she never knew that the pregnancy symptoms will expose her secret. “I’m sorry to disappoint you ma.” “No!!! You don’t need to be sorry, in fact, I’m sorry the way I sounded, you are not a baby, you are old enough. It’s just that you use to tell me everything, so I’m just surprise that you were in a relationship and you never talked about it, also I see you as the type who doesn’t do pre-marital sex.” Mrs. Williams explained herself. “I’m sorry, I kept it from you ma.” “It’s okay, like I said earlier, you are not a baby. Congratulations.” Mrs. Williams said but she didn’t reply. “Now, you need to go home and rest because of your condition.” “Ma, please let me stay, I want to be by his side.”
“Don’t worry, I am here, just go home.” “I don’t want to ma.” She insisted and Mrs. Williams gave up. “Okay, fine, if you want to stay.” “Thank you for allowing me stay ma.” “It’s okay. So, let’s talk. Who is the father of the baby?” Mrs. Williams asked, instead of replying, she broke down in tears. “Iwalade, its okay if you don’t want to talk about it, in fact, I am here for you even if the father does not want the child. I promise to stand by you.” She said but Iwalade was still crying uncontrollably. “Iwalade, what’s going on? Talk to me, you can confide in me.” She said and Iwalade went on her knees, kneeling before Mrs. Williams. The woman was taken aback. “Iwalade, what’s going on here? You know what, stand up first.” She said but she remained on her knees. “Ma, please forgive me, I have wronged you.” Iwalade pleaded. “Forgive you.” She said, surprised. “Iwalade, I only asked for the father of your child but its okay if you don’t want to tell.” “The pregnancy……the pregnancy…..” She still couldn’t speak up. “Iwalade….” She was still saying. “Imisi is the father of the baby.” She spilled. “Wait!!!! Which Imisi?” She said, already sweating profusely. “Your Imisi, I’m carrying his child.” “What! Is this the new joke in town or something because I don’t believe you? How will my son be the father of your child? Iwalade aburo e……….. (Younger brother)” The woman said, still in shock. “I never knew things will turn out this way, but I cherish your son with the whole of my heart. I wish I could resist the feeling but……” “Iwalade, will you shut that your mouth up before I shut it for you!” She said raising her hand at her but later hold back. Iwalade was still on her knees. “I entrusted my son in your care and you took advantage of that and turned him into your sex toy.” “Sex toy!” Iwalade said shaking her head in sorrow. If only the woman knew how Imisi was running after her and ensured he got what he wanted, she wouldn’t have said that. “No wonder you didn’t get married, so this is what you do. So, you sleep with young boys all because you have money to throw around, right. You think you can use people at your will!” “I never used Imisi; he is the most important person in my life right now.” “Will you shut it; you know what just leave this place. Leave my son’s life and don’t ever let our path cross again. Now get out of my son’s hospital room.” She gestured with her hands for her to leave.
“Please ma, I want to be here by his side. You can say anything to me but please don’t let me leave.” She said holding Mrs. Williams’ legs. “Iwalade, I said carry yourself and your bastard and get out of here because that thing you are carrying is not my son’s. Oh! You think he won’t make it right, so you now want to scam the Williams, right.” “I will never do such ma, you know me.” “Really, at this point, I don’t know you anymore. Now, leave.” “She’s going nowhere.” A voice said behind them and they both turned to look at the person who just entered. She removed her nose mask. “Grandma!” The two chorused. “Stand up.” Grandma ordered Iwalade but she still remained on her knees. “Didn’t you hear me,” She said raising her voice. “I said stand up.” She commanded and Iwalade obeyed. “And clean your face.” Grandma added. Then she turned to her daughter inlaw. “Alice, I never knew you are this insensitive and you call yourself a mother.” Grandma said calling Imisi’s mum by her first name. “Grandma….” “Will you allow me talk?” Grandma cut her short. “After all you’ve been through in life, I thought you will be wiser than this but no, you are not. Who do you want to send away? You have eyes but you can’t see, shior.” She scoffed at Imisi’s mum. “Grandma, you don’t even know what is going on here.” “You think so, the first day I met this lady here, what did I ask you?” Grandma asked. “You asked who she is and I told you.” Mrs. Williams replied. “That is because, I knew immediately I saw Iwalade that she is Imisi’s guarding angel.” “What!” Mrs. Williams exclaimed. “Yes, your son would have been long gone if not for her. You just sat here in the hospital doing nothing, instead of you to run out and go look for solution to your problem; you now have the effrontery to send the only one person that intercedes for your son away. For what, because she’s pregnant for him! As if that is new under heaven.” She hissed. “Grandma,” Mrs. Williams said, picking her words carefully not to infuriate the old woman the more. “How did you know that Iwalade is pregnant for Imisi?” “Oh! You think I will sit still and do nothing after I lost my only son? I received these revelation years back and it is happening right now. And guess what, if this lady steps out of this hospital room, then kiss your son goodbye for life.” “What!”“Shebi you have eyes and you can’t see.” Grandma hissed at her and then faces Iwalade. “You are a strong woman; you know the battle you will face if you stay with him but you didn’t run. Other ladies would have run from Imisi if they find out his problem but you stood by him that is genuine love.” She paused and then continued. “I know you are a decent lady, you will be wondering while you let down your guard and been caught up in the act that leads to this pregnancy, right. Iwalade, God knows about everything.” Grandma said and Iwalade burst into tears. “One more thing, thank you for keeping him awake the night he made love to you, if he had slept that night, history would have repeated itself.” “Jesus!” Mrs. Williams exclaimed. “Yes, she knew Imisi’s family history, that is knowledge and she made use of the information, which is wisdom. She is wise.” Grandma stated. “Grandma, I’m shock here, how do you find out all these?” Iwalade asked. “Like I said, I can’t sit around doing nothing when my roof is on fire. I’m not like her,” She said pointing to her daughter in-law. “I sought spiritual help.” “Oh! I see.” Iwalade said. “Let’s continue praying. Jesus, the great physician is on our side. By the way who told you all these stories?” Grandma asked Iwalade. “I did.” Mrs. Williams replied. “Oh! That means you were quite close. Thank God you did, if not we won’t be here now. I’ll leave the two of you to sort out your differences; I’ll check on you some other time” Grandma said and left. Her driver, who was already waiting for her, took her home. The two remained silent for the next two minutes, Iwalade later broke the silence. “Your action earlier is natural ma. Every mother in your shoe will do the same.” “Don’t patronize me.” Mrs. Williams scoffed. “I’m being sincere ma. I am to be blamed for everything. I should have told you the truth from the beginning.” “And you think I will consent to it. I’m grateful God used you for my son but God knows things can never be the same between us again.” “I know you are hurt, just find it in your heart to forgive me ma.” Iwalade pleaded. “There is nothing to forgive; grandma just said you are a life saver. So it’s all good.” She said and left the room. Iwalade went to Imisi’s bed side and wept on him. “Please wake up, I’m all alone here, fight, win Imisi, and come back to me.” She said and when she had cried to her satisfaction, she went into the rest room and washed her face; she returned and sat gently beside his bed.
